Scanning for Internet-enabled programs in Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall
Situation:
You installed Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall. You need to know how you can find and automatically apply security firewall rules to Internet-enabled programs (programs that use the Internet) on your computer.
Solution:
The Program Scan in Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall searches your hard drive for Internet-enabled programs and displays these programs in a list. You can then select the programs to which you want to apply firewall rules. Firewall rules configure the firewall to permit or not permit an Internet-enabled program to access the Internet.
Symantec recommends running the Program Scan. If you do not run Program Scan, then each time that an Internet-enabled program tries to access the Internet, a security alert appears. Use the following instructions to run the Program Scan.
Scan for Internet-enabled programs and apply firewall rules using the program interface
Before you run the Program Scan, it is a good idea to remove all existing program rules. This prevents an existing rule or dependency from accidentally blocking access to the Internet. Follow the steps below to clear the program rules list, and then run a scan to repopulate the list.
To scan for Internet-enabled programs and apply firewall rules using the program interface
- Start Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
- In the main program window, click Personal Firewall, as shown in the following image:

- After you click Personal Firewall, click Configure, as shown in the following image:

The Personal Firewall configuration dialog box appears, as shown in the following image:

- On the Programs tab, do one of the following, depending on what you see:
- If the Manual Program Control list contains a list of programs, then click one of the rules and press Ctrl+A on the keyboard. After you select all of the rules in the list, click Remove, and then click OK to confirm the removal. After the rules are removed, click Program Scan, as shown in the following image.
- If the Manual Program Control list does not contain a list of programs, then click Program Scan, as shown in the following image:

If the "Program Scan" button is unavailable, then you are not logged on as the Norton Internet Security Supervisor account. To log on as the Norton Internet Security Supervisor account, read the document Error: "You have insufficient privileges . . ." or "You do not have the necessary rights . . ." in Norton Internet Security and then return to this document for further instructions.
- In the Program Scan panel, check the boxes next to all of the hard drives and partitions that are listed, and then click Next.

The progress of the scan is displayed. This may take from 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

- After the Program Scan finishes, click Check All (as shown in the following image), or manually select the programs that should have Internet access.

- After you select the programs that should have Internet access, click Next, as shown in the following image:

- On the final Program Scan panel, click Finish.
You may leave the default selections as they are.

- Click OK to exit the firewall configuration window.
